Hades in the test: Hellish good action

Test Conclusion

Test note

1.5

Well

Hades is an ice-cold action role-playing hit - no matter which platform. However, Rogue Like in the console version makes little surprisingly on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S the best figure. Especially the higher frame rate and the crispy 4K graphics have a positive effect on the readability of the fleets struggles. Playfully, Hades remains above any doubt: the mixture of challenges, setbacks and feeling for their own progress is almost perfect. Thanks to the variety of weapons, gifts and other tools never bored. The randomly fluffed levels also fit excellently to this claim. Hades looks inconspicuous on screenshots, but it has a fist thick behind his ears. This cost-effective Rogue-Like adventure is an absolute game fun guarantee and thus a compulsory purchase for all friends of hearty action role-playing games.

Zagreus wants to flee from hell. But that's not so easy if you are the son of the Had's most personally. In the action role play of the same name, they are struggling through the four levels of the underworld and even receive protecting aid of well-known deities and figures of Greek mythology such as Artemis, Achilles or Sisyphus. Hades appeared in September 2020 for PC and Nintendo Switch, but also on August 13, 2021 but also for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X / s. Behind the action role-playing game are supergiant games, the makers of indie hits like bastion or transistor .

Hades ranked into this success story and collected over 50 game of the year awards so far. Zagreus's journey falls into the genre of Rogue Like Games - similar to last the PS5 exclusive game Returnal . That means: The son of the Hellenfürst dies on his escape from the underworld thousand virtual death and starts over and over again. What sounds frustrating, however, works in Hades thanks to clever struggles and a series of motivating character functions.

Fighting, dying, fighting, dying ...

They control Zagreus from the ISO perspective of obliquely above. As a starting point, the halls of the underworld, where they resist after death, also break up to the next attempt. Here, among other things, they talk to other characters or invest in spent resources in enlargements and new weapons. In contrast to other Rogue-like role-playing games, you do not lose everything in the event of a distinction. Certain resources such as keys or darkness remain in the inventory. Because even though they start at zero again and again, Hades gives them a sense of progress. With collected keys, for example, you activate new weapons and then fit your way again to the circumstances. This motivated! Finally, a sword plays very differently than arrow and bow.

Hades proves to be a demanding action role-playing game with a steep learning curve. With every failed attempt, you will also get to know weapons, opponents and bosses better. And so they struggle from a random space to the next. The entrance doors point out which extras you expect to expect the next exam. However, Hades is not a breeze: who wants to survive between energy balls, lava flows and ridden skulls, requires overview and river fingers on the controller. Fortunately, Hades is first class and promptly responded to all buttons commands. Nevertheless, who wants to enjoy this underworld trip, also needs a certain frustration resistance. Finally, a few errors can already require the restart of a run-down run.

Friends in need

Supergiant Games binds the Greek mythology and their figures consistently in the game context. Next to Hades' desk, about the hell dog Zerberus, the Zagreus can even stroke. In history, the devil son receives support from the gods of the Olympus. They repeatedly provide the upcoming son man with weapons and skills extensions: Suddenly arrows also distribute poison damage or Zagreus' evasive maneuvers pull flashes behind them. Of course, you can not include all extensions. And so you have to think well with longer games, which skills you need and which do not.

Within the game world you will also meet old acquaintances. Thus, Sisyphus and the Maulfaule Charon act as a trader that helps them with additional life energy or other tools under their arms. Struggles, character development and history go in Hades hand in hand - and that's exactly what makes the action role play so unique.

Successed porting

In terms of content, the version for PlayStation and Xbox makes nothing different than the PC and Nintendo Switch. Rather, the developers screwed mainly in the technique of console conversion. If it came to Nintendo Switch to occasional backlogs, Hades runs on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at a resolution of 1080p fluid with 60 frames per second. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S, on the other hand, the game delivers the best result at a resolution of 4K and also 60 images the second. Especially the higher frame rate compared to the Nintendo Switch helps you to recognize opposing attacks.

A small disappointment expects the owner of the PlayStation 5: Hades uses the functions of the dualSense controller only marginally; Some additional vibration and lighting effects unfortunately do not get everything out of the modern Gamepad. Unfortunately, these adjustments are barely noticeable in practice. Nevertheless, Hades makes a famous figure overall. In particular, the outstanding soundtrack and the successful voice output contribute very much to the gloomy, but sometimes humourous mood of the game.

Release: Hades appears on August 13 2021 for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X / s. The game costs around 25 euros and is released from 12 years. For launch, Hades is also included in the Xbox Game Pass and thus for subscribers for free.
